Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve in summer: a chain of mountain lakes, walnut and fir forests, hiking trails, how to get there from Osh or Bishkek in comfort.

Our tours
See allFew places in Kyrgyzstan are spoken about with quite the same reverence as Sary-Chelek. The lake sits in the Aksy district of Jalal-Abad province, tucked into the spurs of the Chatkal range and wrapped in forest you would never expect in a country better known for steppe and glaciers. The area has been a nature reserve since 1959 and joined UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves in the late 1970s. Getting here takes effort, and that is precisely why the shore stays so quiet: no coach tours, no promenade — just water, steep slopes and the scent of conifers.

The main lake stretches for several kilometres between sheer hillsides and plunges more than two hundred metres deep, which explains its dense blue-green colour that shifts with every passing cloud. Smaller lakes are scattered around it, and walking from one to the next makes a rewarding day on its own. The forest changes as you climb: walnut groves and wild fruit trees below, Schrenk's spruce and Semenov fir — a species endemic to the western Tien Shan — higher up. In summer the meadows are thick with wildflowers.

The comfortable window runs from June to September, when roads are dry, trails are open, days are warm and evenings crisp. July and August are the greenest months; by late September the forest turns gold, a favourite moment for photographers — see our photographer's guide to Kyrgyzstan. If you are thinking about summer 2027, plan early: accommodation near the reserve is small-scale and the best rooms go first.
Your base is the village of Arkyt at the reserve entrance, where visits are registered. From Osh, the drive via Jalal-Abad and Tash-Kumyr takes most of a day. From Bishkek you can either fly south and continue by car, or turn the transfer into a journey of its own across the high passes and past Toktogul — as described in our Bishkek to Osh road trip. The final stretch is a mountain road, so a reliable 4x4 and a driver who knows it by heart matter.

We don't rush Sary-Chelek into a day trip. Our Magic of Sary-Chelek programme gives the road and the lake four days: private transfers, a carefully chosen guesthouse, dinners built on local produce and a guide who knows both the trails and the reserve's story. The lake also fits naturally into a longer southern itinerary with Osh and the sacred Sulaiman-Too mountain, or into our all-inclusive VIP Kyrgyzstan journey.
