Turn the drive from northern to southern Kyrgyzstan into a journey: Too-Ashuu pass, Suusamyr, Toktogul reservoir and the walnut forests of Arslanbob.

Our tours
See allMost visitors treat the journey from Bishkek to Osh as a logistical problem and solve it with a 40-minute domestic flight. That's a shame, because this single road crosses almost everything Kyrgyzstan has to offer: high mountain passes, nomad summer pastures, a turquoise reservoir carved into the Naryn canyon and the ancient walnut forests of the south. Take three days instead of one long push, and the transfer becomes one of the highlights of your trip.
Heading west out of Bishkek towards Kara-Balta, the road soon starts climbing into the Kyrgyz Range. The first big moment is the Too-Ashuu pass, crossed through a tunnel at roughly 3,200 metres. On the far side lies Suusamyr, a vast high-altitude valley where shepherds pitch their yurts and horses graze freely all summer. This is where we slow down: a walk across the jailoo, a bowl of fresh kymyz with a herding family we know well, and a night in a cosy guesthouse rather than a tiring evening drive. In winter the same valley becomes a snowmobile playground — read more in our story on winter adventures in Suusamyr.

The morning brings the Ala-Bel pass and a long descent through the Chychkan gorge — spruce-covered slopes, a rushing river and roadside spots serving freshly smoked trout. Further down, the Toktogul reservoir appears: a huge body of water on the Naryn River that shifts from emerald to deep blue as the light changes. Your driver-guide knows exactly where it's safe to pull over for the best views. After lunch near Toktogul, the road follows the Naryn past the Kara-Köl dam towards Tash-Kömür.
Instead of sleeping in a roadside town, we detour to Arslanbob, a village beneath the cliffs of Babash-Ata surrounded by one of the largest natural walnut-fruit forests on Earth. An evening among centuries-old trees, a morning walk to the waterfall and a breakfast of local honey and this season's walnuts — these are the moments that make overland travel worthwhile. In autumn, during the harvest, the whole village revolves around the forest, which makes it a gift for photographers.

The final stretch runs through Jalal-Abad and the lively bazaar towns of the Fergana valley, where climate, food and pace all shift noticeably southwards. You reach Osh by lunchtime, perfectly placed to climb the sacred Sulaiman-Too mountain — or to continue into the Alay valley at the foot of the Pamirs.

We travel in premium 4x4 vehicles with experienced drivers who know this road in every season. The pace is yours: photo stops when the light is right, lunches at trusted local places and overnight stays in the best guesthouses and lodges available along the way. The ideal window runs from late May to October; for shoulder season and winter 2026/2027 we plan around weather on the passes.
