Private trout and osman fishing in Kyrgyzstan's mountain rivers and lakes: where and when to go, fly-fishing gear, yurt camps and a personal guide by xtravel.

Our tours
See allKyrgyzstan rarely makes the shortlist of fishing destinations, and that is exactly its appeal. There are no crowded runs or banks lined with anglers here — just glacier-fed rivers, high alpine lakes and the feeling that the whole stretch of water is yours. For xtravel guests, a fishing trip is less about chasing trophies and more about spending a few unhurried days in the mountains with a guide, a private chef and a comfortable camp.
The main quarry is trout and osman. Rainbow trout have settled in many of the country's mountain rivers and lakes, while osman is a native highland fish adapted to cold, thin-air water — a cautious feeder that rewards patience and a delicate presentation. Our most frequent waters include the side valleys running into Issyk-Kul, the rivers of the Suusamyr valley, the Chon-Kemin and the upper Naryn, plus remote high-altitude lakes reached by 4x4, on horseback or by helicopter.

Every itinerary is built around the angler. Some guests want a quiet pool a few steps from camp; others prefer to cover several kilometres of river, prospecting every riffle. River conditions shift from year to year, so we confirm locations shortly before departure based on fresh reports from our guides on the ground.
Kyrgyz rivers are glacier-fed, and at the height of summer many run milky with meltwater. The best windows for fly-fishing are late spring, before the main melt, and above all late August through mid-October, when the water clears and fish feed hard ahead of winter. High lakes open later, usually from mid-summer. We are now taking requests for the 2027 season, and the best dates and camps tend to go early.
Fly-fishing is the core of the program: 4–6 weight rods, dry flies and nymphs, and streamers on the bigger rivers. If you are new to the fly, your private instructor will run a hands-on session at the water's edge — casting, line control and reading the current. There is no need to fly in with a full kit: we arrange rods, waders and wading boots in your sizes in advance. We practise catch and release for larger fish and handle all fishing permits for you.

After a day on the water, you come back to a warm felt-lined yurt or a spacious glamping tent with proper beds, a hot shower and dinner by the fire. The chef cooks with fresh produce and, if you like, serves your trout that same evening. The trip pairs easily with a horseback ride, a traditional banya or a helicopter hop to a remote lake — and non-fishing family members can enjoy a day on Issyk-Kul's shores.

We take care of everything: routing, 4x4 or helicopter transfers, permits, equipment, camp and a dedicated fishing guide who knows each river personally. The group is yours alone, whether you travel solo or with a few friends or colleagues. Tell us about your fishing experience and how many days you'd like in the mountains, and we'll design a trip where the fishing is the highlight — but far from the only memory you take home.
