A chalet near Karakol, winter Issyk-Kul, a helicopter picnic or a yurt feast: private ways to welcome New Year 2026/2027 in Kyrgyzstan, planned by xtravel.

Our tours
See allForget crowded city squares and fixed-menu gala dinners. In Kyrgyzstan, New Year's Eve can mean snow-covered Tian Shan ridges in every direction and a programme built entirely around your own group. Here are the four formats our guests ask for most for the 2026/2027 season, and how we put them together well in advance.
Karakol, at the eastern end of Lake Issyk-Kul, is the country's main winter town and the gateway to the Karakol ski area in the valley above it. The idea is simple: a private chalet or multi-bedroom cottage, a tree by the fire, a personal chef cooking a festive dinner from local produce, then ski lessons, snowmobiles or a quiet walk through a frozen gorge on 1 and 2 January. If you have done our summer Ala-Kul trek via Altyn-Arashan, seeing the same valleys under snow is a different experience altogether.

Issyk-Kul is slightly saline and never freezes, so in winter you get deep blue water framed by a wall of white peaks. This option suits travellers who want rest rather than adrenaline: a lakeside house or a resort with a spa, long walks on empty beaches and an excursion to thermal springs in the nearby gorges. The southern shore is our favourite; we explain why in our piece on Skazka Canyon and the quiet side of the lake.

For a celebration you will talk about for years, we arrange a helicopter outing on one of the first days of January: a flight over snow-covered summits, a landing on a prepared site, hot tea, champagne and a light picnic in complete silence. One honest caveat: winter flying depends entirely on the weather, so we always build in a reserve day and a ground-based alternative in case the cloud sits low.
The most local way to see in the New Year is inside a heated yurt. Felt carpets, a wood stove, a low dastarkhan table laden with beshbarmak and festive dishes, komuz players and improvising akyn poets for the evening, and if you like, an eagle-hunting demonstration or traditional horseback games the next day. It is intimate and warm, and especially popular with families and first-time visitors.

The holiday week is peak season, and the best chalets, lakeside homes and helicopter slots go early, so October and November are the right time to start. We begin with who is travelling: a couple, a family with children, friends or a company team. That shapes the accommodation, the pace and the night itself, from a quiet dinner for two to an evening with a host and live music. Many guests combine formats, for example 30–31 December in Karakol followed by a few slow days on Issyk-Kul. For more ideas, browse our curated travel collections.
