Chon-Kemin National Park: eco-lodges, horse rides, rafting, spruce forests and alpine meadows. How xtravel plans a private 2–3 day retreat near Bishkek.

Our tours
See allSome places in Kyrgyzstan are about scale — Son-Kul, Lenin Peak, the vast blue of Issyk-Kul. Chon-Kemin is about something else: silence. The drive from Bishkek takes roughly two and a half hours, yet the moment you turn into the valley the city feels a world away. Just the sound of the river, the scent of spruce and cut hay, and horses grazing on the slopes.
Chon-Kemin runs for more than a hundred kilometres between the Kungey Ala-Too and Trans-Ili Ala-Too ranges, climbing east towards the source of its river. Most of it has been protected as a national park since 1997. Orchards and riverside woodland give way to dark stands of Tian Shan spruce, and above them to alpine meadows where herders summer their horses. It is also the homeland of Shabdan Baatyr, one of the most revered figures in Kyrgyz history — a story locals are happy to tell over a pot of tea.

You won't find five-star hotels here, and that is rather the point. Instead there are small guesthouses and eco-lodges: wooden cabins, a proper banya, home cooking and mountain views straight from the porch. We pick places with reliable hot water, good beds and hosts who cook with their own produce — fresh bread, honey, clotted cream, lamb from the fire. Smaller groups can take over a whole property for complete privacy.

The real activity in Chon-Kemin is slowing down. But when you feel like moving, the valley offers a few things that come naturally:

Chon-Kemin asks for no sacrifices: no domestic flight, no altitude to adjust to, no endless switchbacks. It is a natural Friday-to-Sunday escape for anyone based in Bishkek or in town on business who wants to tack on a couple of days in the mountains. That same ease makes it popular for team offsites — see our corporate travel page for how we run those.
The starting point is our Chon-Kemin: Beauty and Harmony tour. On the way from Bishkek we stop at the Burana Tower — we covered it in our piece on a day on the Silk Road. Then it's check-in at the guesthouse, dinner and an evening by the fire. Day two brings a ride up to the meadows before heading back. With a third day, we add rafting, a riverside picnic or continue on to Issyk-Kul.
Everything else is tailored: private transfers, your own guide, children's menus, vegetarian cooking, the banya heated when you want it. Autumn 2026 is a lovely time to go — quiet, golden and almost empty — while the best lodges for summer 2027 are worth reserving early.
